What is Matter?

 Anything that has mass and takes up space.

 

Carbon 14 Atom

What defines a Carbon atom?

    Number of protons atomic number

    Isotope atoms of same element with different atomic masses

    Atomic Mass = # of protons + # of neutrons

    Elements contain only one type of atom

    Proton +               Electron -           Neutron (0)

    Electrons are found in the "Electron Cloud"

    Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.

How do atoms combine to form molecules?

Atoms lose or gain electrons to become charged Ion

Positive ions are attracted to negative ions to become molecules
