Grading System

There will be four different grading categories in this class

Lab Grades: 25%

Labs are an opportunity for you to show what you have learned by using hands on skills and previously gathered information.  There be between 3 and 6 labs for every grading period.  Failure to participate in a lab will result in a 0.    Labs cannot be duplicated for any individual, and therefore the true knowledge gained will be lessened.  MAKE UP LABS WILL BE IN ESSAY FORM.

Test Grades:  25%

There will only be one test for MOST Chapters in the book.  There will also be a test at the end of each Unit.  The biggest majority of these tests will be multiple choice, true false, or matching. Any video, discussion, handout, speaker, topic, activity, notes, or reading assignment covered during each unit, is fair game for the test.  MAKE UP TESTS WILL BE IN ESSAY FORM.

Quiz:  25%

There will be several quiz grades each week.  Of these quizzes, about half will be announced, while the other half will be pop quizzes.  POP QUIZZES DO NOT NEED TO BE MADE UP.

Journal:  This is a collection of questions during the first few (3-4) minutes of class each day.  Journals will be taken up the day of each test.  You will be responsible for all Journal entries, even the days you are absent.

Homework/ Classwork: 25%

This is primarily a participation grade or Class handouts, worksheets or other assignments given in class.  You can receive a 0 for a participation grade. HOME WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE.

Extra Credit (will replace a grade)

I will give you the opportunity to have extra credit work that can raise your six weeks grade.  All extra credit assignments will be a typed paper of between 200 and 300 words about a topic dealing with ecology that is either in the news or was in the newspaper.  The only grades that this assignment will not replace are 0s.  In order to receive full credit, you must (1) have this done at least five days before the end of the grading period, (2) have a copy of the article that you used (3) present the information during class.

How to Excel in this class

  1. Be present and attentive in class
  2. Do the assigned reading
  3. Do all of the assigned work
  4. Be willing to work with others
  5. Stay out of trouble

Other Important Information

  • Make-up Policy- any make-up work must be done on your own time and not during class.  Make-up work may only be done before school or after school at the teachers convenience.  See student handbook .  All test and Lab make ups will be Essay Discussion instead of multiple choice.
  • Incomplete grades: are not given in this class.  If in the event that a student misses several consecutive days, and is in the time permitted by the handbook to make up work, the current average of the student will be used, with assignments missed not recorded as 0s until the permitted days has expired.  At the end of the time granted by the handbook, any assignment that have been completed will be averaged into the students grade; and any grade that is not completed will be recorded as a 0.
  • Attendance is necessary to pass this class
  • Computer Use Permission Form: are a must (have done by ___________)
  • No Late Work is accepted
  • Progress Reports:  Progress reports will be given toward the middle of every grading period
  • Labs: If proper clothing is not worn for labs then the student must participate in the clothing he/she has on.
  • ISS:  ISS work is tougher than work done in class
  • Parent/Teacher Conference:  If in the event that a parent/teacher conference is requested, it is a must
  • Fire Exit:  The class will meet at the bleachers towards the art Complex.
