Chapter Four

What is a Rock?

Mixture of:

Minerals

Mineraloids

Glass

Organic matter

What are the three major classes of rocks?

Igneous from molten rock

Sedimentary from pieces of other rocks

Metamorphic heat or pressure changes

Rock Cycle.

Igneous Rock will form Sedimentary rock if Weathered, Eroded and picks up some sediments of Metamorphic Rock.

Sedimentary Rock will form Metamorphic Rock under extreme Heat and Presure

Sedimentary Rock can reform to Sedimentary Rock if Compaction and cementation occurs.

Metamorphic Rock Can Form Sedimentary Rock if Weathering and Erosion Occurs

Metamorphic Rock Can Form Igneous Rock if Melting and Cooling Occurs

Igneous Rock can form Metamorphic Rock if Melted and Heat and pressure occur

See page 87

Igneous Rocks

1.      Magma: Inside

2.      Lava:  Outside

a.       Rhyolite, Obsidian, (Intrusive)

b.      Diorite, Gabbro are examples (Extrusive)

Igneous RockClassification

Basaltic, Granitic

Metamorphic Rock Classification

Foliated and Nonfoliated

Sedimentary Rock Classification

Shale, Limestone, Sandstone, Conglomerates

Sediments loose materials

Compaction pressed together

Cementation stuck together with other material
