Standards For Ecology

 

The state does not give any specific standards for this class.  However, there are some standards that are required for you to know.  Below is a complete list of items in which you are responsible for.

 

 

 

1.      Students will be able to investigate and understand the web of life.

Key words:  food chain, consumer, producer, photosynthesis, predator, prey, omnivore, carnivore, herbivore, detrivore, scavenger, and ecological pyramid.

 

2.      Students will be able to investigate and understand the concepts of laws and regulations pertaining to the following:

Soil conservation, endangered species, game species, natural parks, national forest, Wildlife refuge, Sanctuary, Various Laws and Regulations.

 

3.      Students will be able to investigate and understand population growth and declines

Key words:  immigration, emigration, stable, population, overpopulation, morality, birthrate, migration, and death rate.

 

4.      Students will be able to identify by sight, characteristics, and status, different species of life including, but not limited to, the following list of local species

Mammals:  White-tailed deer, Opossum, Raccoon, Black bear, Wolf, Coyote, Beaver, Ground Hog, Elk, Bobcat, Rabbit, Grey Squirrel, Skunk, Muskrat, River Otter, Red fox, Grey fox, Virginia Big Eared Bat, Chipmunk, House Mouse, Deer Mouse, Southern Flying Squirrel

 

Birds:  Bald eagle, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch, Mourning Dove, Eastern Wild Turkey, European Starlin, Red-tailed Hawk, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Northern Bobwhite, Whip-or-will, Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, Various Water fowl, Indigo bunting, Tufted Titmouse, Belted Kingfisher, Grey Catbird, American Kestrel, Various Woodpeckers, Bluebird, Ruffed Grouse, Snipe

 

Reptiles and Amphibians:  Black Rat Snake, Eastern Hognose Snake, Green Snake, Copperhead, Timber Rattle Snake, Eastern Box Turtle, Snapping Turtle, Black Racer, Worm Snake, Garter Snake, King Snake, Yellow bellied Turtle, Various Skinks and Lizards, Red Spotted Newt, Marbled Salamander, Spring Peeper, Bull Frog, Tree Frog, Spotted Salamander, American Toad.

 

Vegetation:  White Oak, Red Oak, Willow Oak, Hickory, White Pine, Virginia Pine, Loblolly Pine, Red Cedar, Dogwood, Sassafras, Red Bud, Sweet Gum, Black Gum, American Elm, Tulip Poplar, Wild Cherry, American Holly, Allegheny Blackberry, Japanese Honey Suckle, Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, Running Cedar, Green Briar

Insects and Spiders:  Various species of: caterpillars, mosquitoes,beetles, fleas, earwigs, aphids, flies, cockroaches, locus, grasshoppers, moths, butterflies, crickets, ants, ticks, flies, bees, spiders,

Fish:  Sockeye Salmon, Blue Gill, White Crappie, Channel Catfish, Carp, Brook Trout, Golden Trout, Golden Trout, White Bass, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Large Mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Spot, Croaker

5.      Students will be able to use and understand the purpose and function of the following tools:

Compass, Microscope, DBH tape, Tree Bore, Soil Sampling Tube, Field Guides, pH Equipment

 

6.      Students will be able to investigate and understand reasons for changes made in the environment, and the significance toward different species.

Clear Cut, Seed Tree Cut, Select Cut, Target Cut, Tilling, Conservation

 

7.      Students will be able to investigate and understand the negative and positive impacts that humans leave on land.

Conservation, Hunting, Project Wet, Project Wild, Environmental Law, Pollution

 

8.      Students will be able to investigate and understand the significance and difference of renewable and non-renewable resources

Key words:  Recycle, Natural Resource, Fossil Fuels, Half-life

 

9.      Students will be able to identify scientific names of various species found in Standard # 4.
